Gisela Hellrung, born in Düsseldorf, studied oboe at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts under Prof. Ingo Goritzki. Until her concert exam in 1996, she was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation.
After winning several first prizes in the “Jugend musiziert” competition in the solo oboe and chamber music categories, she achieved international success with the Delos Wind Quintet, winning the International Chamber Music Competition in Osaka in 1993 and the German Music Competition in 1994.
From 1994 to 1995, she played for a year as principal oboist with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Since 1996, she has been the principal oboist of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra.
Since April 2010, Gisela Hellrung has been a lecturer for oboe at the Anton Rubinstein International Music Academy.
