Egon Hellrung received his first horn lessons at the Leinefelde Music School, later at the special school for music in Weimar.
From 1975 to 1980 he studied at the Academy of Music in Weimar with Karl Biehlig, who had a decisive influence on his further who had a decisive influence on his further artistic career.
His first engagement took him to the Berlin State Opera in 1980, where he was employed as principal horn player until 1985, where he was employed until 1985.
He has held the same position with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne since 1986. Guest concerts have taken him to most European countries, as well as to Japan and the USA.
From the winter semester 2023/24, Egon Hellrung will be a lecturer for horn at the Anton Rubinstein International Music Academy in Düsseldorf.
